England captain Steph Houghton has thrown her weight behind UEFA’s Together #WePlayStrong campaign.
European football’s governing body aims to transform the women’s game and make it the number one sport played across the continent within five years.
The campaign, supported by The FA, aims to engage a youthful female audience and encourage them to keep playing football in their early teenage years – an age when girls often drop out due to a variety of reasons, such as low self-esteem, low self-confidence and social pressure.
UEFA ambassador Houghton said: “Campaigns like this are fantastic.
“I’ve played football my whole life and I know how much it can do for your confidence.
“I just love the game. It has given me a great life and I’ve made some lifelong friends, all because of football.
“We always want to get more girls involved, as players, coaches or referees, and we already do a lot of great stuff in England like Girls’ Football Week, so hopefully #WePlayStrong can have a big impact.”
The FA recently launched its Gameplan For Growth which aims to double women’s and girls’ participation by 2020.
