Roy Hodgson was impressed with the Arena Amazonia in Manaus during a visit to the host city of England's opening World Cup game.

The Three Lions face Italy there on 14 June, so Hodgson and an FA delegation made the journey to Manaus while in Brazil for a FIFA World Cup Workshop.

Arena Amazonia, a 46-000-seater stadium, is nearing completion and will host four games this summer.

"It's very impressive, I must say," said Hodgson. "I didn't expect to see the grass looking so green and so well-manicured as it is.

"The seats are all in place, the dressing room is very good. I would say here in Manaus they are probably as far forward as any stadium if you discount Rio and the Maracana, which has been ready for a longer period.

"They must be very pleased with it, so I've got no reason to fear anything here when it comes to facilities."

Hodgson had a long conversation with ground staff at Arena Amazonia, including the man responsible for the playing surface.

"He was saying they have got some fine-tuning to do with it, they've got some top seeds to put on which will perhaps make the grass grow even more, and a little bit of evening out in one or two areas.

"But we're still a long way from 14 June, so you'd expect that."

Hodgson's visit to the city also took in the training ground that England will use in the build-up to their meeting with the Azzurri, and also the team hotel for their stay.

"The hotel is very good, it's newly-built, the rooms are very comfortable, everything is very functional. We won't stay there for many nights as our base camp is in Rio. But I'm perfectly happy with that.

"The training ground is going to be very nice, but they are not quite as far advanced as they are here at the stadium so it was a little more difficult to form an opinion.

"They've still got to lay the pitch, they've still got to do a lot of the work, but they tell us everyone is convinced that by the time we'll be back it'll be ready."

Around 3,000 England fans will be going to Manaus for the the World Cup encounter and Hodgson says they can expect a great experience.

Also during his visit this week, Hodgson took a boat trip on the Amazon River and also looked around the city's impressive Opera House Theatre.

"They'll enjoy it here, especially if they have a bit of time like we have today to look around, to visit the Opera House, the centre of town, to see where the two rivers meet, that was a very interesting experience.

"Everyone has been very friendly here, and any England fans can expect a very wearm welcome form the people of Manaus and hopefully they can see a very good game in this stadium."
